Posie, Chas, Jim, and I played a few sets in honor of Baltimore activist, artist, builder, provocateur, and Renaissance man, Dennis Livingston, on November 13th at the Cork Factory in the Station North neighborhood of Baltimore. It was an enormous honor to pay tribute to a human being of such stature and to be in the company of the core of Baltimore arts activism. I bow all the way down to Dennis’ beautiful soul mate, wife, and life partner Carol Higgs, and to the spirit of this great man.

Multi-reedman John Dierker “has become a major improvisational stylist…interweaving concepts augmented by howling lines, injections of blues-drenched choruses and Albert Ayler-like display of energy.” (All About Jazz) A Baltimore, Maryland native, Dierker has worked in a wide variety of musical settings, collaborating with Peter Zummo, Jason Willett, Jad Fair, and The Basement Boys. John is a longtime member of Lafayette Gilchrist and The New Volcanoes. Currently he is working with Quartet Offensive, Microkingdom, and 3081, a group that includes Michael Formanek, Dave Ballou and Will Redman. (Photo: Stewart Mostofsky)
On Friday night, Dierker graced our ranks and helped Boister deliver up DW Griffith’s “Intolerance” to a standing ovation at the University of Maryland’s Hoff Theater.
And for the record, here he is with Boister’s Lyle Kissack in the 1990′s Baltimore dream team, The Pleasant Livers.

After, I don’t know, 14 years? of collaboration, our bass clarinetist, Denis Malloy, has decided to explore new terrain. Check him out on our 2nd record, Song of the Smoke, through our most recent studio album, Some Moths Drink the Tears of Elephants, featuring his beautiful original, “Thought Bubble.” You can also hear him on excerpts from our score for Intolerance, as well as our version of NPR’s theme for Morning Edition, both featured on our music player here. A toast to an excellent player.

DNA Theatre brings a Halloween theme to the ancient art of circus with “Spectacle Obscura.” A performance full of mystery and magic, this show promises to tingle the senses and spook the soul.
Acrobats fly on trapeze, aerial cloth, and handstraps. Contortionists balance bodies and strong-men climb poles to the sky, all to an astounding live soundtrack by Baltimore’s amazing cabaret style band “Boister.”
